Welcome to St. Catherine's!
Greetings friends,
Thank you to all who attended the Saint Catherine's Vestry last Sunday (Feb 23rd) - all motions were carried. The Wardens also made the announcement that Rev. Dr. Angus Stuart will be starting as Interim Priest-in-Charge on March 16th, 2025, when I step down and into the role of Property Development support.
This Sunday is the last Sunday in the season of Epiphany - it is the Feast Day of the Transfiguration. Disciples of Jesus are working out what it means to live in a real world while embracing spiritual experience.
NOTE: Even though this Sunday is the first Sunday of the Month, there will NOT be Soul Food Sunday. We will be celebrating the first Sunday of Lent on March 9th, 2025 with a Soul Food Sunday.
Tuesday night we will be joining Highlands United for Pancakes. Gillian Holland and Monica Macdonald will have tables set out to support the Emergency Food Program with grocery donations, and the Primates World Relief and Development Fund with cash donations. See more below.
On Wednesday there are three opportunities to receive Ashes for Ash Wednesday - 10 am (at AMICA); noon and 5:30 pm at St. Catherine's.
May you know Christ's abiding presence and peace this week,
Sharon

Good Friday: Hope in Troubled TimesAn invitation to all photographers Good Friday this year is on April 18th, 2025. It has been our practice since COVID to offer sacred art for the Saint Catherine's community and wider neighbourhood. Rhonda Garton, Lynn Spence, Heather Luccock and Rev. Sharon are putting together a photo and prayer exhibit, and we are seeking assistance from the community. As we look towards Good Friday, we remember the words that Jesus spoke from the cross. In particular: Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing, and My God, My God why have you forsaken me? These words are said by a person in anguish. And this anguish is the raw reality of our world at this time. We watch the devastation that comes from war and civil unrest. Yet we also remember two of Jesus’ other sayings from the cross: Behold your son, behold your Mother, and I thirst (with the accompanying response of a compassionate person). These words invite us to a picture of human care and Christ’s identification with humanity. These are more hopeful pictures of human resilience in troubled times. We are inviting any photographers in the Saint Catherine’s community to submit images that capture something of the theme: Hope in Troubled Times. For example you may have a photo from your travels that depicts the devastation of war, or a place of remembrance like a memorial site. Or you may have an image that epitomizes human compassion and care - children laughing on the street, a grandmother holding hands with a child or a mother and baby in front of a stark landscape. We are inviting you to submit 8 x 10" prints (unframed, and not your original) to the St. Catherine’s office by March 21st, 2025. Rhonda, Heather, Lynn and Rev. Sharon will be creating an exhibit for Good Friday where the community and neighbourhood can view images, read poems, scripture and pray for our world. Not all photos will be singled out in the main display, some may be in a collage format. Please note: this is not an opportunity to showcase family photos. Please speak to any of us if you have any questions. Photo: Father and son at Vietnam Memorial photo by Timothy J (Creative Commons) |
