Last July 11, newspapers headlined the planned cuts in water supply for certain parts of Metro Manila, stating that affected households will have no water supply for 11 hours daily due to the below critical level of Angat dam and other water resources arising the El Nino phenomenon that was projected to extend all the way to first quarter of 2024. A week after, however, the planned water supply cut was shelved due to increase in dam water levels from typhoos Egay and Falcon, leading affected communities in Metro Manila to rejoice over the lifting of what could have been a difficult situation of no water supply. But almost side by side with this rejoicing was a horrible story about the P 4.47 billion damage in agricultural crops and farms and the death of 29 persons due to typhoon Egay. How can someone leap with joy at the same time that others cry in agony? It is truly scary and alarming that one single event causes relief and rejoicing to one group of people at the same time misery to another. All because of humanity's collective folly. We are indeed in a severe climate crisis!
