Today we are remembering Saint Francis of Assisi. In 1979 Pope John Paul II named Francis the patron saint of those who promote ecology. This gave formal recognition to the popular perception of Francis’ relationship with nature as ecologically ideal.
Saints can help shape us in the people we desire to be as they serve as models of how to live lives with the values of Christ.
Francis is one such saint:
- he loved creation passionately, as a brother, lover and friend;
- he experienced God in creation; and
- he provides an example to us of reflective action, when he encountered the pain of the world, it inspired him to pray and to act with compassion.
